Director of Internal Audit

Description:Heritage Federal Credit Union is seeking applicants for Director of Internal Audit.

This position performs independent audits in accordance with established policies and procedures and professional standards. Evaluates internal controls, examines accuracy of financial and other data, verifies and evaluates management systems and programs and recommends improvements. Focuses on accountability, internal controls and on improving organizational efficiency and effectiveness by working with management to recommend improvements to operations.
Duties:1. Assumes responsibility for the development and implementation of effective internal audits that review operations, procedures, policies and financial performance reporting.

a. Complete institution wide assessment to determine areas of potential risk to the credit union. Complete the assessment with the assistance of third party vendors and internal review.

b. Develop annual audit plan based on risk assessment.

c. Develop audit programs for the areas of the operation and ensure that the programs can discover areas of weakness if applicable.

d. Assess internal controls to ensure adequate safety and soundness in all areas of the institution.

e. Performs audits of financial accounting functions, operations activities, loan processes, reimbursements and other areas as assigned.

f. Interviews credit union personnel to gather information and determine compliance with established procedures.

g. Selects a random statistical sampling for confirmations of compliance with credit union policies and procedures and federal and state regulations of various operations and functions.

h. Identifies and reports discrepancies, errors, and other detected problems.

i. Coordinates annual exams with federal regulators as well as external audit firms. Assists with these audits as requested.

2. Assumes responsibility for the effective audit reporting and planning as assigned.

a. Prepares audit reports outlining the scope of each audit and its results, and recommends corrective measures as necessary. Assembles and maintains documents in the prescribed manner.

b. Directs the development of new or improved financial and operations audit programs. Develops audit procedures and makes recommendations regarding what is to be audited, the method to be used and the frequency of audits.

c. Assists in establishing or revising internal financial and operation controls to ensure the adequate protection of credit union assets.

d. Presents audit results as required and explains suggested recommendations.


3. Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective coordination and communication with area personnel and with management.

a. Ensures the Supervisory Chairman and the CEO is well informed of area activities and any significant problems.

b. Provides assistance and support to credit union personnel as needed.

c. Completes reports, records, and documents accurately and promptly.

d. Attends and participates in meetings as required. Prepares special presentations as assigned.

e. Assists other auditors as needed.


4. Assumes responsibility for ensuring that professional business relationships are established and maintained with external business contacts and audit professionals.

a. Maintains appropriate levels of confidentiality.

b. Represents the credit union in contacts with business and trade associations and otherwise promotes the credit unionís interest


5. Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.

a. Assists with requested audits or projects.

b. Stays informed of trends and developments in the auditing field.
Qualifications:QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: Bachelorís degree in accounting or related field.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE: Industry certification such as CPA or CIA preferred

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: At least eight to ten years experience in a lead audit position at a financial institution.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Solid analytical and problem-solving abilities
Strong written and oral communication skills
Ability to work well independently
Ability to operate all related computer software applications
Analytical ability and the ability to conduct thorough research, interpret and understand laws and regulations pertaining to financial institutions and to provide workable recommendations and solutions to problems.
Broad knowledge of financial institution operating areas, functions, products and services and the laws and regulations that apply to them
